How to Use Pomodoro Without Wasting the Break

Use focus intervals and breaks in a way that supports attention instead of replacing one distraction with another.

Start with a specific task

A timer works better when the session has a defined target.

Choose a duration you can sustain

The classic 25-minute interval is a starting point, not a law. Longer tasks may benefit from 40–60 minutes.

Make breaks restorative

Stand, stretch, drink water or rest your eyes. Scrolling through stimulating content can make the next session harder to start.

Track completed sessions, not just time

A session that produces practice answers or a revised paragraph is more informative than simply knowing that 25 minutes passed.

Adjust the method

If you repeatedly lose focus before the timer ends, shorten the interval. If the timer interrupts deep work, lengthen it.
