How to Shorten an Essay Without Losing Meaning
Reduce word count by removing repetition and weak phrasing before cutting useful evidence.
Remove repetition first
Look for sentences that restate the same point without adding evidence or a new implication.
Replace wordy phrases
Phrases such as “due to the fact that” can often become “because,” and “in order to” can often become “to.”
Combine related sentences
Two short sentences with the same subject may be clearer and shorter when combined carefully.
Protect evidence and reasoning
Do not cut the example, citation or explanation that proves your main claim just to hit a number.
Recheck the prompt
If a paragraph does not help answer the assignment question, it is a stronger candidate for removal than material that directly satisfies the rubric.
