What this tool does
Percentages describe a part relative to a whole of 100. They appear in grades, discounts, statistics, growth rates and probability.
Formula or method
A% of B = (A ÷ 100) × B; A is what % of B = (A ÷ B) × 100
Example
25% of 80 is 20. If a score rises from 80 to 100, the percent increase is 25%.
How to use it well
Use realistic inputs, check any assumptions shown on the page, and compare the result with the rules used by your school, teacher, or assignment. CurioLift tools are designed to make the calculation transparent rather than hide it.
Frequently asked questions
Why can percent change exceed 100%?
Because the change is measured relative to the starting value. Doubling a value is a 100% increase.
Is percentage the same as percentage points?
No. Moving from 40% to 50% is a 10 percentage-point increase but a 25% relative increase.
